Heat pumps run on the same refrigeration principles our engineers have worked with for more than 30 years. So we understand both halves of the system: the refrigerant circuit in the outdoor unit, and the heating and hot water it feeds inside.
Air source heat pump installation
A heat pump only works as well as it was designed. Too small, and it struggles on cold mornings. Too big, and it keeps switching on and off, wasting electricity and wearing out early.
That's why every quote starts with a survey. We size the system for the way your home actually loses heat, not a rule of thumb.
We fit air source heat pumps and hybrid systems, which pair a heat pump with a boiler. We work in new builds, stone cottages, terraces and everything in between. Many of our customers in rural North Yorkshire, Northumberland and the Durham Dales are off the gas grid and replacing oil, LPG or storage heaters.
How an installation works
- Survey We measure each room, work out the heat loss and check your radiators, pipework, hot water cylinder and where the outdoor unit can go.
- Design and quote We size the heat pump, radiators and cylinder, and send a written quote that sets out exactly what's included.
- Installation We fit the outdoor unit, cylinder and controls, and upgrade any radiators that need it.
- Handover We set the system up for your home, show you how to use the controls and register it, so you get your MCS certificate.
Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant
Most homes can get £7,500 towards an air source heat pump. The grant is for homes in England and Wales replacing fossil fuel or electric heating, and only MCS certified installers like us can claim it. We check you're eligible at the survey and take the grant off your quote.
Heat pump repair
We repair air source heat pumps, whoever installed them. Most faults show up as one of a handful of symptoms, and our engineers can trace them quickly because they understand both the refrigeration and the heating side. Common faults we fix:
- Error or fault codes on the controller
- No heating or no hot water
- Radiators that never get properly warm
- Low system pressure, leaks or air in the system
- An outdoor unit that ices over and won't defrost
- Loud or rattling noises from the fan or compressor
- Refrigerant leaks, which need an F-Gas registered engineer
- Running costs that have crept up

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to install an air source heat pump?
It depends on the size of heat pump your home needs, whether any radiators need upgrading and whether you need a new hot water cylinder. We give you a written quote after surveying your home. For most homes in England and Wales, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, currently £7,500, comes off that price.
Am I eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant?
Usually, if your home is in England or Wales and you are replacing a fossil fuel heating system such as oil, LPG or gas, or electric heating. The heat pump must be fitted by an MCS certified installer, which we are. We confirm your eligibility at the survey.
How long does a heat pump installation take?
Most homes take a few days on site. It takes longer when several radiators or the hot water cylinder need replacing. We confirm the timescale in your quote, and you are only without heating for part of that time.
Will I need new radiators?
Not always. A heat pump runs at a lower water temperature than a boiler, so some rooms may need a larger radiator to stay warm. The heat loss survey shows which rooms need one, so you only replace the radiators that need it.
Do you repair heat pumps you didn't install?
Yes. We repair air source heat pumps whoever installed them. Our engineers are F-Gas registered, so they can also work on the refrigerant side of the system, which many heating engineers cannot.
Do you work on commercial heat pumps?
Yes. We install, maintain and repair heat pumps for businesses, including planned maintenance and F-Gas leak checks. We also look after commercial air conditioning and refrigeration, so one team can cover all your systems. Commercial maintenance is quoted for each site.
Can a heat pump work in cold weather?
Yes. Air source heat pumps take heat from the outside air even when it is well below freezing, and models sold in the UK are designed for our winters. Correct sizing matters most: a system designed for your home's heat loss keeps it warm on the coldest days.
